"My paper's on the back burner."

You knew what you were getting into:

Your academic career depends on getting published.

But even with that kind of pressure on your shoulders, it's easy to let other things get in the way of writing.

You know that research papers and book chapters don't just magically crank themselves out month after month: you need to write.

So you finish a study and you write up the methods and results (aka the easy part), but then your half-finished paper sits on your desktop "until you have time" to finish it.

(Which you never do.)

But other things keep getting in the way, and your paper stays on the back burner.

And you're not ignoring it, exactly—you know it's there, waiting for you, and if you don't send it off to a journal soon it's going to be too late.

You even open it every once in a while to re-read it, but it's too overwhelming to dive into revisions right then and there.

Instead of struggling with your paper (and feeling sick to your stomach about it), what if you could just get on with it?

What if you could just sit down and write—and it felt easy?

What if you knew exactly how to tackle all the sections you're struggling with?

How would it feel to finally finish what you started?

Guess what? I have something that can get you there:

The Writing Retreat

A self-paced program to help you finish that paper that's been hanging around your neck.

I need to finish this paper, but I don't have time.

Sarah explains one of the other benefits of the DIY Writing Retreat: a walk-through of how to plan your writing schedule.

Here's how the program can help you:

Get Unstuck

Most academic writers get stuck in two places: the introduction and the discussion. Learn how to write those sections using a formula that will keep reviewers and readers interested.

Stick To The Word Count

Too wordy? No problem. I'll teach you how to cut the extra bits without losing the story. Video lessons and a downloadable guide will give you the tools you need.

Get Focused

Sixteen guided writing sessions (you read that right) will keep you on task and efficient, so you can make the most of the time you set aside. Follow-through problems? Not anymore.

"Thank you so much for a terrific writing workshop. I appreciate the supportive, non-judgemental, encouraging style that you used with the group of us in the workshop. It is the same style that I experienced when I worked with you one-on-one for my grant proposal. Your insights and clear feedback transformed my grant proposal, and the writing weekend helped me to focus and finish a book chapter that has been hanging over my head for awhile. Thank you."

Who's in charge here?

I'm Sarah Dobson. I'm a medical editor and grant consultant. I've been helping researchers get funded and get published for more than a decade. I designed the curriculum for this program based on my experience helping academics work through the most common pitfalls in their writing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 WHO’S THIS FOR?

This program is designed for researchers in the health sciences and those who write academic papers using the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) format.

Beyond that basic criterion, here are a few other ways to tell if this is the right program for you:

  • You've had a paper on the back burner for a few months but can't seem to find the time to sit down and finish it
  • You struggle with the amount of time it takes you to write
  • You always get sidetracked by other projects/obligations
  • You're starting to panic about your publication record
  • You prefer to write on your own (you don't need to check in with a group for accountability)
  • You can't imagine blocking off an entire weekend to write
  • You can't make one of the Writing Weekends to get live teaching from Sarah

DO I NEED TO HAVE A DRAFT ARTICLE?

Yes! This retreat works best when you're at least 70% of the way there. You could always use this retreat as a kick in the pants to get started, but you'll get better results if you have something to work with.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED TO SET ASIDE?

The first lesson helps you figure that out! I walk you through how to create a plan to finish your draft, and then the lessons and guided writing sessions help you get there. There are 10 hours of lessons and guided writing sessions, but finishing your draft may take longer than that.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE ACCESS TO THE PROGRAM?

FOREVAH. Seriously, you have lifetime access to the program. (So you can do as many writing retreats as you can handle!) Here's another perk: if you find that your writing could benefit from some live support from Sarah and some group accountability, you're welcome to join any upcoming Writing Weekend for a small fee. You'll get an alert well before each Writing Weekend so that you can plan.

CAN I USE DEPARTMENTAL FUNDS FOR THIS?

You should definitely ask! You'll need to pay for the course via credit card and get reimbursed, and you can request a detailed invoice to submit to your institution.

WHAT'S YOUR REFUND POLICY?

This is a non-refundable investment in your writing and in your career as a researcher. Before you buy this program, please take a look at the free resources available on www.sarahdobson.ca to see whether learning from Sarah is right for you. Think carefully about whether Sarah's approach matches your learning style. If you have any questions about the program, please email [email protected]
